The chart above outlines health effects of daily ground-level ozone concentrations. But long-term exposure to ozone pollution can lead to far-reaching health problems. According to Dr. Erik R. Svendsen, an environmental epidemiologist in DHEC’s Bureau of Disease Control, “Health effects from high amounts of ground-level ozone could include worsening of chronic bronchitis and asthma; cause chest pain, shortness of breath, wheezing, coughing and nausea. It could be harder to breathe and repeated exposure to high levels could result in lung damage.”
